Substance Abuse

WHAT IS SUBSTANCE ABUSE?

Substance abuse involves the misuse of drugs or alcohol and is part of the addiction spectrum.

There are many reasons why people experiment with drugs, often out of curiosity or if their friends are doing it. Whilst this is often a one off infrequent activity in some cases using drugs can lead to abuse. Ultimately the spiral from casual use into addiction varies from person to person and there are often multiple factors that contribute to this. It is when you move towards dependence and it starts to interfere with your daily activities, with the consequent impact on relationships, health and performance, that you are considered to be addicted.

Overcoming drug abuse can be very difficult and most people will require help in the form of specialised drug treatment. Recovery typically involves a combination of withdrawal therapy, self-help support groups and counselling. Treatment for drug abuse can only be successful if an individual is ready and willing to change.

Our expert therapists here at Dr Julian can help with managing drug addiction and substance misuse. They will help guide you in management strategies to help with withdrawal from the drug and keeping sober off it.
