Appointments

How do you confirm my appointments?

Once an appointment with a clinician is booked you will receive an automated email confirmation. This email will provide you with further information including links to questionnaires to be completed prior to the appointment.

What are the Free Assessments?

Our Free Assessments are standard validated questionnaires used within the NHS for assessing symptoms of depression, anxiety and a number of other conditions, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. These questionnaires assess the severity of these conditions.

The questionnaires will be selected for you by your therapist and are used throughout your treatment to help you and your therapist to track progress and identify further areas for focus.
You can track your own therapeutic progress and questionnaire scores through your platform view.

How long is my appointment?

Appointments on the Dr-Julian platform are normally scheduled for one hour. This includes a minimum of 50 minutes of talking time with your healthcare professional and 10 minutes for the professional to record the notes from your appointment.

We may at times have appointments of different durations such as 30 minutes, with pro-rata talking time of 25 minutes.

The length of the appointment will always be visible when you book an appointment.

What happens if my appointment over-runs?

For one-hour appointments your therapist is committing an hour to you. This allows for no less than 50 minutes of contact time (providing you start your appointment on time) and 10 minutes of admin and note writing time for your therapist. If for whatever reason your contact time exceeds 50 minutes, this is fine, but it cannot exceed 60 minutes.

For appointments that are 30 minutes long, this would break down to no less than 25 minutes of contact time and 5 minutes of note writing/ administration time.

How do I book repeat and/or regular appointments?

If you want to book a further appointment with your clinician, you can agree on a date and time for a future appointment with them during your appointment. They will then update their availability on the web app to make that time available to you.

If you do not pay for your appointments, your clinician will book the appointment for you directly.

If you are a private patient, you must book and pay for that time slot immediately to secure it. You can book multiple appointment slots at the same time on the Web App by selecting several appointments before proceeding to payment.

We recommend booking your next appointment in as soon as possible so the appointment is secured for you.

How often do I need to see my therapist?

The frequency of sessions will depend on the therapy type and your personal needs. Your therapist will discuss with you how often they believe you should have a session in order to receive the maximum benefit. Usually, sessions take place once weekly, but these can be flexible to accommodate your needs.

Is there a set number of sessions that would be most beneficial?

The number of sessions you have with Dr-Julian will depend on your clinical presentation and the type of intervention you receive. Your clinician will discuss this with you in your first Dr-Julian appointment. For example, many people will need between eight to twelve sessions for a course of CBT therapy. Other therapies may require fewer, or more sessions.

You can end your course of therapy whenever you feel it is right to do so. However it is strongly encouraged that you discuss any wish to end your therapy sessions with your therapist first, so you can bring matters to a satisfactory closure.

Is video online therapy effective?

Video online therapy has been proven to work just as well, and in some cases, better, than traditional face-to-face therapy. Large review articles such as ‘Usefulness of telepsychiatry: A Critical evaluation of videoconferencing-based approaches. Charkrabarti (2015)’ have shown equivalent clinical effectiveness in over 200 trials at the highest levels of medical evidence. Patient satisfaction was frequently reported as higher in the online therapy groups.

For face to face appointments: Please wait in the reception area and your therapist will collect you from the waiting area at the allocated time.

What happens if my therapist cancels my appointment?

In the unfortunate event that your clinician cancels an appointment, you will be notified of this as soon as possible by email notification.

Your appointment record will automatically be updated to illustrate the cancellation, and your account will be automatically re-credited with an appointment.

If you are a private client and require a refund, please email your therapist in the first instance. If you require further assistance please contact info@dr-julian.com.

What happens if my therapist does not confirm my appointment?

Once your appointment is scheduled, it will be automatically confirmed, and you’ll receive an email notification with all the details.

How do text appointments work?

Text appointments enable you to chat directly with your therapist via text in real time for the duration of your appointment time. A copy of the chat transcript will then be saved in your ‘My Text appointments and Messages’ section of your dashboard.

How do I select a suitable therapist for my needs?

The Dr-Julian platform allows you to choose a therapist based on your individual preferences. You can filter for days of the week, times of day, languages spoken and much more.

You are free to click onto therapist profiles, read their biographies, and decide if the therapist is right for you before committing to making an appointment. You can also contact the therapist directly if you have any questions.

If you are uncertain about selecting the right therapist, our Dr-Julian Customer Service Team can help you to find an appointment that best suits your needs and requirements.

How can I resume therapy after being discharged?

If you wish to resume therapy after being discharged, please contact your mental health care provider or referring NHS Trust. They will discuss your situation with you and, if appropriate, can re-refer you to Dr-Julian for a second episode of care.

Typically, a period of consolidation of around 3-6 months is recommended after discharge.

What are the earliest and latest appointment times available?

We offer appointments from 6am to 11pm, seven days a week, including Bank Holidays, Easter, Christmas, and New Year, thanks to our team of both full-time and part-time therapists.

Why am I not seeing any available appointment options when searching?

If no appointment options appear, it may be due to a lack of availability matching your specific criteria at the time of search. Try adjusting your search by selecting different times or broadening your availability.
New appointments are added frequently throughout the day, so availability is continuously updated.
If you require any support with sourcing and booking an appointment, please contact: admin@dr-julian.com.

Do you offer translation services?

Many of our therapists offer sessions in several languages, which you can filter for when booking your first appointment. If you can’t find a therapist who offers sessions in your preferred language, please contact our switchboard or email us at admin@dr-julian.com. Our Customer Service team will then support to match you to an appropriate clinician.

I completed my NHS-funded treatment but would like to continue privately. How can I arrange this?

Unfortunately, for contractual and ethical reasons we are unable to offer private therapy to patients whom we have previously seen via the NHS. This is standard ethical practice supported by our accrediting bodies and designed to protect patients from potential exploitation.

If you are an NHS patient who would like to return to Dr-Julian for a second episode of care, please contact your NHS Provider in the first instance. NHS Providers will usually offer a reassessment to patients following an appropriate consolidation period (3-6 months). During your reassessment your assessing practitioner will discuss treatment options with you which may include (but not guaranteed) a re-referral back to Dr-Julian for a second episode of care.

For EAP (employee assistance programme) providers it is sometimes possible for you to register on our platform for self-funded sessions by using a different email address. For further information please email; admin@dr-julian.com.

This helps improve engagement and makes support feel more personalised.

Employees access support through the Dr-Julian platform.
Depending on the service model, they may be able to complete onboarding questions, access personalised resources, book appointments, choose a clinician, and engage with support between sessions.

Do you support ADHD and neurodiversity?

Yes.
Dr-Julian can support employees with ADHD and neurodiversity-related needs through pre-screening, psychoeducation, therapy, coaching-style support, and practical digital tools.
This can help employees better understand their needs and access appropriate support earlier.

What types of support do you offer employees?

We support a range of mental health and wellbeing needs, including anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, trauma, relationship difficulties, workplace challenges, and neurodiversity-related needs.
Support may include therapy, guided self-help, ADHD pre-screening, coaching-style support, and personalised digital resources, depending on the employer’s chosen model.

How is Dr-Julian different from a traditional EAP mental health offer?

Traditional EAP mental health support is often designed around short-term counselling or initial signposting within a wider support package.
Dr-Julian takes a more clinically led and flexible approach, focused on:

  • Timely access to therapy
  • Patient choice of clinician
  • Personalised care pathways
  • Ongoing engagement and support
  • Outcome tracking and reporting

This enables organisations to provide a more structured and continuous model of mental health support.

How does Dr-Julian complement an EAP?

Many organisations choose to use Dr-Julian alongside their existing EAP.
EAPs often provide broad, generalist support across areas such as legal, financial, and helpline services.
Dr-Julian complements this by providing a more structured and clinically focused mental health layer, including:

  • Direct access to therapy
  • ADHD and neurodiversity pathways
  • Personalised digital resources
  • Ongoing support between sessions

This helps ensure employees can move beyond signposting into appropriate care when needed.

Can Dr-Julian replace our EAP?

In some organisations, Dr-Julian is used as a full replacement for traditional EAP provision. In others, it is used alongside an existing EAP.
Dr-Julian offers a clinically led mental health and wellbeing model that can be configured to cover many of the functions typically associated with EAPs, alongside more structured access to therapy, neurodiversity support, and personalised digital care.
Where broader services such as financial guidance, employment support, or helplines are required, these can be delivered through our platform and partner network.
This allows organisations to design a model that best fits their workforce, whether that is replacing, enhancing, or integrating with existing provision.

Is Dr-Julian an Employee Assistance Programme?

Dr-Julian is not a traditional Employee Assistance Programme, but it can be configured to operate as, or alongside, an EAP model.

Our core focus is clinically led mental health support, including rapid access to therapy, neurodiversity pathways, and structured digital care.
In addition, through our platform and partner network, we can support a broader range of employee needs, including:

  • Employment and workplace support
  • Access to curated self-help and advisory resources
  • Helpline-style access, where required

This can also be delivered through our Healthcare Resource Builder, which enables organisations to provide localised, personalised, and trackable support across multiple wellbeing domains.

For NHS Partners

Is Dr-Julian compliant with NHS data security and governance requirements?

Yes.
Dr-Julian meets NHS data security and governance requirements and holds relevant accreditations, including ISO 9001, ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials, and NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit compliance.
We also undertake regular security testing, including annual CREST-approved penetration testing.

How is Dr-Julian different from a standard therapy provider?

Dr-Julian is both a clinical provider and a digital infrastructure platform.
This means we can deliver therapy while also supporting the wider pathway around care, including onboarding, triage, booking, matching, resources, outcomes, reporting, and service management.

Can Dr-Julian work alongside existing NHS providers?

Yes.
Dr-Julian can work as an additional capacity partner, a digital infrastructure partner, or a pathway support partner.
We do not need to replace existing providers in order to add value.

How quickly can a service be mobilised?

Mobilisation depends on the scope of the service, technical requirements, governance arrangements, and integration needs.
For most pathways, configuration and integration can be completed within weeks. More complex deployments involving specialist integration, pathway redesign, or multi-service rollout can require a structured mobilisation plan.

What reporting can NHS partners receive?

Reporting can include referral volumes, appointment activity, attendance, DNA rates, outcome measures, patient engagement, resource usage, pathway activity, and service-level trends.
Reporting is configured around the needs of the commissioned service and information governance requirements.

Can Dr-Julian support social prescribing or WorkWell-style programmes?

Yes.
Our Healthcare Resource Builder can be used to create localised, governed resource pathways for social prescribing, WorkWell, employment support, primary care, and community mental health programmes.
This allows staff to assign relevant, approved resources to individuals and gives commissioners better visibility of engagement and need across populations.

Does Dr-Julian offer face-to-face care?

Yes.
Alongside digital support, Dr-Julian can offer face-to-face care where required. We are able to mobilise in-person clinical provision depending on organisational needs and workforce location.
This enables a blended approach, giving employees the option to access support in the way that works best for them.

Can Dr-Julian support ADHD pathways?

Yes.

Dr-Julian can support ADHD pathways through two complementary approaches:

1) ADHD pre-screening and early intervention
We offer structured pre-screen consultations, typically including a one-hour session with a specialist ADHD clinician. This includes:

  • Clinical discussion and screening
  • Psychoeducation around ADHD
  • Guidance on next steps
  • Access to therapy, coaching-style support, and digital resources where appropriate

This pathway helps individuals better understand their symptoms and needs, and supports earlier intervention. It can also help NHS systems manage demand by identifying individuals who may benefit from support without requiring full diagnostic assessment.

2) Full ADHD assessment and treatment pathway
Where clinically appropriate, Dr-Julian can also provide:

  • Comprehensive ADHD assessments in line with NHS standards.
  • Diagnosis in line with clinical guidelines
  • Medication initiation and titration (where indicated and appropriate)
  • Ongoing follow-up and monitoring

This allows for a complete pathway from initial concern through to assessment, treatment, and ongoing support.

Overall approach
Our model is designed to support both patients and systems by:

  • Providing early clarity and support
  • Reducing unnecessary escalation where appropriate
  • Ensuring access to full assessment and treatment when clinically required
How do you manage clinical risk?

Clinical risk is managed through clear governance structures, qualified clinicians, supervision, escalation processes, clinical record keeping, safeguarding procedures, and appropriate communication with NHS partners.
Where patients present with risk or complexity beyond the agreed service scope, escalation pathways are followed in line with the commissioned model.

Is Dr-Julian CQC registered?

Yes.
Dr-Julian Medical Group is CQC registered, allowing us to provide regulated healthcare services where required.
This is particularly important where partners need assurance around clinical governance, safety, regulated activity, and service delivery.

What is Dr-Julian?

Dr-Julian is a clinically led mental health service and digital platform supporting NHS organisations to improve access, manage demand, and deliver care more efficiently.
We combine clinical service delivery with digital infrastructure, including patient onboarding, appointment booking, clinician matching, outcome monitoring, personalised resources, and pathway reporting.

Does Dr-Julian offer face-to-face care?

Yes.
In addition to our digital services, Dr-Julian can provide face-to-face care where required. We are able to mobilise an in-person clinical workforce to support specific pathways, locations, or service requirements.
This allows NHS partners to deliver a flexible model of care, combining digital access with face-to-face provision where clinically appropriate.

Does Dr-Julian integrate with existing NHS systems?

Yes. The Dr-Julian platform is fully integrated with IAPTus and PCMIS. Our platform technology is interoperable and customisable to all NHS systems.
We can integrate with existing NHS systems and workflows, including EPR and clinical record systems, depending on the service specification and technical requirements.
Our aim is to reduce administrative burden and support existing pathways, not create unnecessary duplication.

Can patients access appointments outside normal working hours?

Yes. Dr-Julian offers appointments 365 days of the year, 6am-11pm.
Dr-Julian offers flexible appointment availability, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and bank holidays, depending on the pathway and commissioned service model.
This can help improve access for people who may struggle to attend appointments during standard working hours.

How does Dr-Julian support patient choice?

The platform allows patients to choose clinicians based on factors such as availability, therapy type, language, appointment format, and clinician profile.
This helps patients feel more involved in their care and can improve engagement, attendance, and continuity.

Can Dr-Julian help reduce waiting lists?

Yes. Dr Julian’s ethos is that we operate no waiting list and offer immediate access to treatment. Our service model, and technology infrastructure fully supports National NHS KPIs targets, specifically in relation to access, wait times, engagement, clinical outcomes, and patient satisfaction.
We support waiting list reduction through additional clinical capacity, flexible appointment availability, improved patient choice, lower DNA rates, and digital tools that support patients between sessions.
In some pathways, such as ADHD pre-screening or early intervention support, we can also help identify people who may benefit from education, self-help, coaching, or therapy before moving into more specialist assessment.

How can Dr-Julian support NHS Talking Therapies services?

We can support NHS Talking Therapies services by providing additional therapy capacity, digital appointment booking, patient choice, clinician matching, outcome monitoring, and administrative workflow support.
We can work alongside existing clinical teams and systems rather than requiring services to replace their current operating model.

Do you provide clinical services, technology, or both?

Both.
Dr-Julian can provide direct clinical services, digital infrastructure, or a combined model depending on the needs of the NHS partner.
This means we can support services that need additional clinical capacity, services looking to improve digital access and workflow, or systems wanting a more structured way to manage demand.

Who do you work with in the NHS?

We work with a range of NHS partners, including ICBs, NHS Talking Therapies services, staff wellbeing services, specialist pathways, primary care, and wider community mental health programmes.
Our model can support both system-level commissioning and local service-level delivery.

Dr-Julian is suitable for people 12 years of age or older. If you are under 18 you will be matched with a therapist who has specialist qualifications and training in working with children and young people.

Can I use this service even if I am not based in the UK?

Yes. Our service operates internationally as required.
However, If you are an NHS patient then it is advisable to check with us before proceeding, as some services do not allow their patients to be seen outside of the UK.

What is the Dr-Julian Platform?

Dr-Julian is an innovative mental health and well-being platform that aims to increase accessibility to mental healthcare in the UK. We instantly connect you to mental healthcare professionals, including Psychotherapists, Counsellors, Psychologists, and Neurodiversity Specialists by secure video/audio/text link from the comfort of your computer/ tablet or phone, or face to face.

The Dr-Julian platform promotes patient choice and matching you to the right clinician. You can find clinicians by filtering language/therapy type/problem/availability, read clinician’s biographies and contact clinicians prior to committing to an appointment.

Booking an appointment is easy. Once you have selected an appointment with your chosen clinician, simply select “proceed to booking”.

How many people get counselling/therapy?

There are currently no statistics available on how exactly many people receive therapy in the UK each year. However, it is clear that a growing number of people are seeking therapy.

Research shows that 1 in 4 British adults will suffer with a mental health problem at some stage in their life, so it is increasingly common to experience some sort of difficulty that can be helped by therapy.

In the past year more than 1.4 million people have been referred for therapy by the NHS alone.

Are all therapies the same?

Not all therapies are the same, but they do have some similarities. All therapies should make you feel that you are supported and help you to make sense of your individual circumstances. By the end of any therapy, you should feel that you are better equipped to cope with the future.

Each type of therapy is designed to help a different set of needs, so therapies will differ from each other in certain ways. Psychodynamic therapy concentrates on talking about your past, whereas other therapies may choose to focus on the present, or the future. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) often involves ‘homework’ for you to do. Some therapies, like mindfulness therapy, are more spiritual.‍

Please see the therapies page on our web site for more information.

What sort of therapies do you offer?

Finding the right therapist and the correct type of therapy to match your needs is the most important element when choosing a therapy service. Depending on your individual needs, we have a wide variety of therapists offering multiple therapy types. Please see our therapies page for more information.

You can filter our therapists by your needs, including language, therapy type, issue type, date/time and consultation method (face-to-face, video, voice, telephone, messaging). This helps you to find the right therapist for your needs.

If you are unsure or need further help, our customer success team is on hand to offer support. Please contact admin@dr-julian.com.

How do I know if I need therapy?

Therapy is suitable for, and can be beneficial to, anyone who is in need of talking to someone. People who need therapy come from a wide range of situations and backgrounds, and they have a wide variety of difficulties. No problem is too small for therapy.

If you are feeling stressed, experiencing a challenge you would like help in overcoming, or if you just want to have a chat with someone and get something off your chest, then therapy could be right for you.

When is Dr-Julian NOT right for me?

If you are undergoing an acute psychosis, or you have a severe mental illness that is being managed by specialist teams outside of Dr-Julian and are experiencing a relapse, please contact them directly or approach your GP for further help.

What technology do I need to connect to Dr-Julian?

We currently offer our service via conventional internet or through a smartphone using 4G. Using conventional internet, you can access Dr-Julian Platform via a free web app app.dr-julian.com. This can be used on all computers/ tablets and phones. The best way to access the Dr Julian platform is via Google Chrome. You access appointments, complete questionnaires, book appointments, and communicate with our Dr Julian Customer Service team via this link plus much more.

Appointments can be undertaken on most laptops, desktop computers, smartphones, and tablets with webcam and microphone. To ensure you have the best possible experience, we recommend that you check your internet/ Wifi connection before joining an appointment.

The recommended minimum internet speeds are as follows :
Download: 3.5mbps
Upload 1.5mbps

If your speed test shows slower speeds than we recommend checking that no other devices (eg TV’s, Tablets, Laptops and other media devices) are using your internet connection. This will ensure you have the full available speed for your appointment.

It is also a good idea to check that your device is not downloading any files during the appointment; this can include but is not limited to Windows updates, Movie or Music downloads or streaming – for example Netflix and YouTube.

If your internet speed does not meet our platform’s minimum requirements it will be necessary to conduct your appointment using another source. In this instance please notify your clinician using the “Send Message” button in the Messaging Centre feature on the platform.

If connecting using a mobile phone network, you will need a minimum of 3 bars signal strength.
